Candle Burning Safety

The following tips are taken from the National Candle Association.

This week I would like to discuss Candle Burning safety.

Did you know that More than 15,000 candle fires are reported annually. According to fire experts, the bulk of candle-fire incidents are due to consumer inattention to basic fire safety or to the misuse of candles.

Candles are safe products, but unless they are used safely and watched carefully, they can lead to an accidental fire.

If you follow the following common sense rules, you may avoid property damage or even death.

1) Always keep a burning candle within sight. Extinguish all candles when leaving a room or before going to sleep.

2) Never burn a candle on or near anything that can catch fire. Keep burning candles away from furniture, drapes, bedding, carpets, books, paper, flammable decorations, etc.

3) Keep candles out of the reach of children and pets. Do not place lighted candles where they can be knocked over by children, pets or anyone else.

4) Trim candlewicks to ¼ inch each time before burning. Long or crooked wicks cause uneven burning and dripping.

5) Always use a candleholder specifically designed for candle use. The holder should be heat resistant, sturdy and large enough to contain any drips or melted wax.

6) Be sure the candleholder is placed on a stable, heat-resistant surface. This will also help prevent possible heat damage to counters and table surfaces and prevent glass containers from cracking or breaking.

7) Keep the wax pool free of wick trimmings, matches and debris at all times

8) Always read and follow the manufacturer's use and safety instructions carefully. Don't burn a candle longer than the manufacturer recommends.

9) Keep burning candles away from drafts, vents, ceiling fans and air currents. This will help prevent rapid, uneven burning, and avoid flame flare-ups and sooting. Drafts can also blow lightweight curtains or papers into the flame where they could catch fire.

10) Always burn candles in a well-ventilated room. Don't burn too many candles in a small room or in a "tight" home where air exchange is limited.

11) Don't burn a candle all the way down. Extinguish the flame if it comes too close to the holder or container. For a margin of safety, discontinue burning a candle when 2 inches of wax remains or ½ inch if in a container.

12) Never touch a burning candle or move a votive or container candle when the wax is liquid.

13) Never use a knife or sharp object to remove wax drippings from a glass holder. It might scratch, weaken, or cause the glass to break upon subsequent use.

14) Place burning candles at least three inches apart from one another. This is to make sure they don't melt one another, or create their own drafts that will cause the candles to burn improperly.

15) Use a candle snuffer to extinguish a candle. It's the safest way to prevent hot wax from splattering.

16) Never extinguish candles with water. The water can cause the hot wax to splatter and might cause a glass container to break.

17) Be very careful if using candles during a power outage. Flashlights and other battery-powered lights are safer sources of light during a power failure. Never use a candle during a power outage to look for things in a closet, or when fueling equipment - such as a lantern or kerosene heater

18) Make sure a candle is completely extinguished and the wick ember is no longer glowing before leaving the room.

19) Extinguish a candle if it smokes, flickers repeatedly, or the flame becomes too high. The candle isn't burning properly and the flame isn't controlled. Let the candle cool, trim the wick, then check for drafts before re-lighting.

20) Never use a candle as a night light.

Clip your Wicks!

Yes, you read the title right! Clip your wicks!!!
In order for you to have a nice burning, even pooling candle with terrific scent throw, you MUST and I cannot stress the word MUST too often CLIP YOUR WICK!!!
Make sure before you light your candle each and EVERY time, you CLIP your wick to 1/4". WHY you ask? Heres why.....

First off, lets look at the safety reason... if your wick is too tall, then your flame is too tall, if your flame is too tall then there is a greater chance that your flame with come above the top of the jar, especially when you first start burning your candle, allowing the greater chance of something coming in contact with the flame, thus starting a fire.

2nd, if your wick is too tall, then it creates black carbon like substance on the sides of the jar, which is a pain to get off.

3rd. If your wick is too short, then it could cause your flame to be extinguished in the melted wax. if this happens, just use a knife and dig the wick out of the wax and relight.

So, if you keep your wick trimmed to 1/4" you will have a beautiful burning candle that will last you hours.

Proper Candle Burning

Most people when they burn a candle only burn it for a short time. The proper way to burn a jar candle is to initially burn it for 1 hour per inch of the diameter of the jar. (Ex)... If you have a 16oz Jar candle with the mouth being 3 1/2" in Diameter, then you need to burn it for a MINIMUM of 3 1/2 hours.
This will create an even melt pool and it wont tunnel down the center. After the initial burn, you may burn it for as long as you want... JUST make sure the top of the wax is completely melted, BEFORE you extinguish it.!!!
